It's a revolutionary notion that you can be healthy and happy regardless of your weight.

The major components of HAES, as described by Jon Robison, are:

Self-Acceptance: Affirmation and reinforcement of human beauty and worth irrespective of differences in weight, physical size and shape.
Physical Activity: Support for increasing social, pleasure-based movement for enjoyment and enhanced quality of life.
Normalized Eating: Support for discarding externally-imposed rules and regimens for eating and attaining a more peaceful relationship with food by relearning to eat in response to physiological hunger and fullness cues

The basic, and very simple, idea is that you should eat healthfully and exercise because you care about your health and you enjoy it and not in response to a number on a scale. 95% of people who try to lose weight gain it back in 1-5 years.

The constant routine of dieting, losing, gaining and dieting is called weight cycling and is incredibly bad for your health. Of the 5% who manage to maintain weight loss it's usually only partial weight loss and is done mainly through starvation diets and diets are nothing but socially acceptable eating disorders. HAES focuses specifically on health and not on weight and reminds us that the two are not automatically linked and that obsessing over weight itself may actually be harmful in and of itself. You know all those fat people you run into who are health nuts? Yeah, they're probably practicing HAES and I'm definitely one of them. So eat your fresh organic spinach kiddos!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Swift loss......weight loss

In these days, many people are suffering from being overweight or even rapidly putting on some weight. This is why people seem to lose weight on crazy fad diets. But these diets are developed to be temporary: they do not require that you make any permanent changes in your life. And that is what it takes to lose weight, meaning these diets will inevitably fail.

When we look, and look, and look, for help in our quests to lose weight, rapid weight loss diets become highly enticing. This, we think, is what I have been looking for. This will work. We are willing to believe unbelievable claims because we want to and need to. For other people, it is a quick fix and instant gratification. From time to time we’re not willing to wait for lasting change, so we’ll take the temporary satisfaction of seeing results, regardless how fleeting they are. If you are still tempted to try a fad diet, consider the reasons why they don’t work:

1. Same old, same old

Often, rapid weight loss diets don’t provide our bodies and appetites with a variety of foods. We end up eating the same foods, day after day. Eating the same food all the time becomes a chore. It does not encourage us to consume less.

2. Cheating!

When you are limiting yourself and restricting the foods you eat, the forbidden appears doubly alluring. One cookie won’t hurt, you think. But then you end up gobbling a whole bag. Rapid weight loss diets are risky for the reason that they can, if truth be told, lead you to eat more each time you fall of the diet wagon.

3. They can be hard to stick with.

Quick weight loss diets are notoriously hard to integrate into your life and to commit to a lasting part of your eating routine. From boredom to lack of variety to binging, it is too easy to cheat or give up.

4. The risk of gaining weight.

Many people gain more weight each time they go on a rapid weight loss diet. Whether it is for the factor that it is so easy to cheat or you overeat each time you stop the diet, your diet tends to pack on pounds. Nothing is more frustrating that being back at square one. The alternative to quick weight loss diets? The answer is healthy eating behaviour and regular exercise. Regardless of our wanting to believe in miracle diets, healthy eating and exercise are the only way you can achieve lasting, healthy weight loss. To see real and long term changes in your body, incorporate a number of the following into your life:

* Add more nutrient-dense vegetables to every meal.

* Add more fiber to your diet. Not only does it help improve overall health, it has the advantage of helping your body burn more fat.

  * Try eating small meals throughout the day.

* Make breakfast your main meal and dinner your small meal.

* Exercise. Get active! Anything from playing tag with your kids to taking the stairs at work can help get you in better shape.

* Have regular workouts. If you are short on time for one long exercise session per day, do multiple short ones.

* Add nutrient-rich whole grains to your diet.

* Make better calorie decisions. Opt for nutrient-dense foods to get the most benefit from each calorie. Eat quality before you reach for empty calories.

The longest journeys begin with a single step. This is true of weight loss too. Little steps can lead to great rewards, and if you commit to a few good changes, you can increase the changes of a lasting change in your body and health. Having a healthier life, one in which you eat nutritious food and exercise normally can make weight loss easier, more practical, and permanent. Don’t "diet". It doesn’t work. The majority of rapid weight loss diets are, at best, temporary fixes that promise far more than they deliver.

Quick Weight Loss | Ultimate Fat Loss Blog

Top 10 weightloss tips

10. Dietary control …

All you have to do is watch what you eat and spend more energy than you actually consume. Really, it is that simple, but you have to be motivated in order to do so.

9. Change your lifestyle …

If you are just going on a “diet,” then you will end up gaining all of that weight back within a couple of months of getting off of that diet. Diets really do not work, they are only temporary. However, when you change your lifestyle, you will be changing those habits and putting yourself on track for long term success.

8. Online support groups …

Joining an online support group is a great idea and it worked for me. There are many online support groups that you will be able to turn to. FatBlaster is one of them. Someone just told us about PeetTrainer, but I have never tried it out. It is great to have someone there for moral support as you are trying to lose weight. This is one of the best weight loss tips you will receive.

7. Take before and after photographs …

We know, you may not like seeing yourself as being overweight, but there is no easier way to go about showing your progress. The after photos you will be taking of yourself will be much more fun to capture and share with everyone. This is one of the top weight loss tips, because it works.

6. Substitute your food …

Before you reach for those brands that you love, think first. Yes, eggs are good for you, but try to substituting them instead. There are many restaurants out there that will allow you to order lower calorie foods.

5. Start reading those labels …

I know, reading those labels may suck, but you have to do this and there is no way you can avoid this. This is the only way you can tell exactly what you are putting in your mouth. Triple check those serving sizes and ingredients list.

4. Let your family know …

You are not going to lose weight alone, even if you are alone in losing those pounds. If you have family at home, then tell them about it. Let them know what you are doing and why you need to. Tell them how important it is to have their support.

3. The Gazelle …

You have probably viewed Tony Little on television as he was selling the Gazelle glider. This is a low impact exercising machine and it definitely works. It is easy on your legs and will give you the ultimate workout.

2. Video games …

Believe it or not, video games will help you lose weight. I could keep balance on the Gazelle and played my Xbox 360 at the same time. It will really get your adrenalin going and pass time. Halo 3 on Xbox live has worked wonders for me!

1. Exercise …

There are many different exercises out there and none of them were created equal. Get on your bike and start pedalling, get on your treadmill and start running, get on your exercise ball and start exercising, whatever you do, exercise!

Those are not only the top weight loss tips, but they are the weight loss tips that truly work! I have used each and every single one of these tips and that is why I have lost so much weight!

6 Weeks to change your mind

Ok so I admit I have allowed myself to slip over the past year and have added a few unwanted kg’s. So starting today I am going to get my mind around the issue and I believe what works for me is to take 6 weeks and to just half my portion size of whatever I eat. This allows my body to adjust to having less Kilojoules. Important during this time is to not do any physical exertion as your body will not be able to cope. As it is you will feel deprived and could suffer some physical side effects like headaches and hunger pains. My cure is to increase your water intake and to start adding a few healthy choices like eating raw fruits and vegetables as snacks. Carrots and apples work well for this.

Pop back soon as I will post the tools, menu plans and tips I use to help me shed unwanted weight

CookingLight.com - Making healthy taste great

A great find with some really nice Chicken recipes. Drizzle dressing over salad; toss to combine.

Note: You can toast nuts quickly in a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Stir frequently, and as soon as they become fragrant, remove the nuts from the pan.

Nutritional Information

Calories: 334 (29% from fat)

Fat: 10.9g (sat 2g,mono 5.9g,poly 2.1g)

Protein: 20.9g

Carbohydrate: 35.8g

Fiber: 2.9g

Cholesterol: 39mg

Iron: 1.8mg

Sodium: 484mg

Calcium: 23mg

CookingLight.com - Making healthy taste great

Top Tips From More Big Losers

Tiffany Way, 48, Kingsland, GA: Lost 80 pounds

1. Kick the junk food habit. “I like to eat while watching TV. Now, instead of bingeing on junk, I’ll peel a grapefruit because it takes time.”

2. Pick protein to overcome a plateau. “I lose more weight if I mix things up. If the scale is stuck, I’ll eat more lowfat protein—tuna, Egg Beaters, beans—and fewer carbs. Protein keeps me fuller between meals, too.”

Tanya Crews, 42, Boston: Lost 70 pounds

1. Speak first to stay on track. “When I eat out with friends, I always order first so I’m not influenced by their choices.”

2. Stop all-or-nothing thinking. “You don’t have to give up the foods you love. When I crave fried clams, I work them into my diet without going overboard. Otherwise, I’ll end up consuming just as many calories with other, less satisfying stuff.”

Patty Brown, 47, Hollister, CA: Lost 71 pounds

1. Eat between meals. “Waiting too long to eat is a recipe for eating too much. I definitely make better choices when I’m not starving!”

2. Take it step by step. “I use a pedometer when I walk so I can see how I’m doing at a glance. Let me know if you agree - or have other hidden reasons you've discovered!
YOUR EATING
Confusing “heart-healthy fat” or “fat free” with low calorie. Switching to olive oil from butter is a heart healthy choice, but won't save you any calories. To lose weight, it's important to cut the amount (instead of a tablespoon at 120 calories, try a teaspoon at 40 calories, since it's so flavorful). Fiber rich, whole grains are a great choice, and fat-free, but the calories add up we don’t stop with ½ - 1 cup serving. The only solution to this is label reading for calories per serving; when you see that reduced-fat peanut butter has just about the same calories as regular peanut butter, you won't be fooled by clever ads.
Poor calorie “eyeballing” (studies show 50% too low). We all feel we’re good at estimating portion size, but the cues to do so set us up for failure. Studies show we are at least 50% too LOW in our estimates – even when professionals do it.
Skipping Meals. Too busy, or choosing to skip a meal to save calories? The problem with meal skipping is you get over-hungry for the next meal – “I didn’t realize I was so hungry”, once you start eating.

YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Too much exercise is a biological stimulant for hunger. This is very common for dieters who only want to focus on exercise as a way to cut calories.. Rigorous exercise stimulates appetite to “refuel” for metabolic balance. I'm talking 2 hours of more intense activity. Plus, like the poor "eyeballing" of food, most of us aren't skilled at estimating how many calories are used for activity. Just remember it can take 5 minutes to eat a 500 calorie piece of pie, and nearly 2 hours to exercise it away!
On the other end of things, no exercise is a diet disaster. Whether it's lack of time, or lack of interest - only 100 cal a day – a 20 minute walk – helps you lose 10 pounds in a year! Even a small drop in physical activity (that people ignore) packs on the pounds. Here's an example I recently heard from a patient of mine: “I used to park blocks away in a cheaper parking lot. I got promoted, and get the corporate lot. I’ve gained 5 pounds in 3 months.”
YOUR BEHAVIOR
Lack of sleep is a huge problem – when we're tired, we eat for energy. When we're tired, we lose our focus, and discipline, and lose the mental control needed to stay on track. Between-meal snacks to “wake up” are the solution when a power nap would be better. Our body's have 24-hour rhythms in many hormones and pathways - like body temperature - that don’t “reset” and get out of balance with lack of sleep.
Poor stress management - a lof of mindless eating comes from the lack of focus due to mental stress. We often confuse business with poor stress management. "I feel overwhelmed" say many patients. We eat to soothe, to reward ourselves, and to indulge in extra calories. Food DOES make us feel better, but we have to learn to self-soothe in other, non-food ways as well.
Lack of consistency (5 days on, 2 days off). “I’m trying but lifestyle isn’t working”. Some general awareness every day is needed to avoid what I call “weight creep”. It takes only 100 calories extra a day to gain 10 pounds in a year. Most often, people “relax” their lifestyle on the weekend, and can easily pack on a couple of pounds a month – 7000 calories (that’s 2 pounds) – over 8 weekend days – only about 850 calories more a day.
YOUR BIOLOGY (BODY):
Medications can cause weight gain as a side effect, when they are started. Some stimulate appetite, and others slow your metabolism. A range of medications from antidepressants; antipsychotics some antihistamines, as well as insulin and blood sugar drugs, some blood pressure medicines, and anti-inflammatory drugs can pack on the pounds. Check with your doctor when starting a new medication, and always ask if weight gain is a reported side effect - there may be another medication you can take without this side effect. This happens only at the beginning of a new medicine. If you’re started a new medicine, and gained 4 pounds or more in a month, check with your doctor…..It’s NOT the cause if you’ve been taking a medicine, and then find suddenly you’re gaining weight, months after you’ve started.
Undiagnosed Mood Disorders. Undiagnosed depression or anxiety is both behavioral and biological. While many think depressive symptoms are only the “classics”: loss of appetite, insomnia, and weight loss, a large subgroup sleeps more and eats more. Oftentimes thyroid gland problems are linked to mood disorders (see below), and can result in weight gain.
Thyroid Function – The thyroid gland is your body’s “furnace” and sets the thermostat. This is regulated by a signal from the brain to release thyroid hormone into the system. Either resting or stimulated thyroid gland activity can be a problem, and result in slow, steady weight gain.
Elevated fasting insulin. This is known as "insulin resistance" or " metabolic syndrome" and often found in people with an "apple" shape (weight accumulates in the middle). It's invisible unless you get a blood test. Blood insulin levels can be high, with blood sugar levels being normal (everyone knows that number). It does not mean diabetes (where blood sugar is high), but is a sign of pre-diabetes. This can greatly sabotage a solid weight loss effort - and correcting the problem (with medication for starters) makes that weight loss effort easier. A further plus - more weight loss alone can help lower your fasting insulin - getting you off the medication to correct the original problem!

Hidden Reasons You Can't Lose Weight
This will start you on the road to getting your mind around the portion control thing.

Next I will post some sample menus to help you plan your meals.
Fell free to email me if you need more assistance or need to ask a specific question.

fab before

  fab before
Originally uploaded by fionabh.
Ok I have been asked to post some before pics and here is a shocker – this was after Callum not sure how long maybe 6 months. I went to Doc on Friday and she said to me do I realise I have lost 17 kg since she last saw me end of May? I was amazed as I knew my cloths were loose and was beginning to have problems looking presentable as they would be falling off.
Now this was all part of it. I realised what I had learnt long time ago was not to make the whole weight loss thing a conscious thing all the time. So I worked out a plan which allowed me to negate this.
To start with try and get the 1st 2 meals a day as regular as possible. By this I mean have the same thing day in day out - make sure it is liked by you. I choose Special K each and every morning, this meant no thinking and it was a non negotiable I had to do it. The one reason is it set the tone for the day and prevented that 10:00 craving. This also helped me not ponder and get stressed about what to eat it was always the same. Think of other things.
Next we tackle lunch here again things vary depending on your current situation.
What I suggest is everyone interested in signing up contact me 1st so I can see if there is 1 fit or several options to try.
Start out with breakfast and throughout the day for the 1st weeks remember to drink water.
There are some great water bottles on the market just carry it with you all the time. I try and get 1 glass in at waking and lots while driving to work then the rest is just easy. Try it - it works. And remember if you are going to the loo all the time it is a good thing it will settle out though so do not stress.
Now it will take as much as 6 weeks to get into this but the results should be instant, I predict 1kg a week max depending on you circumstances. You need to realise that the 1st 6 weeks are going to readjust your pre programmed ideas so yes it is tough but we can all do so try what do you have to loose to coin a cliché!
You will continue to loose till your body has stabilised, I am still loosing hopefully getting back to my 85kg. Thereafter I know I have gone too far. So set realistic goals and do not over do it, your body cannot be fooled it knows how much it needs.

Good Luck and here’s hoping you all have the results I have had.

The water thing again.......

10 Tricks for Getting Enough Water
by Lynn Grieger, RD, CD, CDE
Summer is not the only time you should be concerned with drinking enough water. It is important to keep the body hydrated all year long. Both hot and cold weather can dehydrate the body, leaving you with dry skin and chapped lips.
Water is the most important nutrient in our diets. It actively participates in chemical reactions; lubricates and cushions joints, eyes and the spinal cord; aids in body-temperature maintenance; and serves as the solvent for many small molecules. You need at least 48 ounces (6 glasses) of fluid to maintain optimum health, more if you exercise. Here are ten tricks for fitting it all in:
1. Take a water bottle to work and make an effort to sip from it continuously throughout the day.
2. Instead of reaching for coffee, squeeze a lemon slice into a mug of hot water for an instant cold-weather warmer.
3. Drink a glass of water before each meal.
4. Keep the refrigerator stocked with bottles of cold water.
5. Use a larger glass at meals. If you normally use an 300ml glass, try a 500ml glass.
6. Take a full water bottle on all bike rides or car trips -- even if you're just running to the store.
7. Buy a waist pack that holds a water bottle, and take it with you on walks.
8. Use sports drinks before, during and after any summertime activity.
9. Have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
10. Make a fruit smoothie for breakfast. Blend fresh fruit, seltzer water and vanilla yogurt for an easy pick-me-up that's also a good source of fluid.

I have started this

I have started this blog with articles from various internet and magazine sources as I am always asked for info and most of my friends – you guys are often too busy to find them. Eat protein at every meal, including breakfast.
2. Eliminate wheat- and flour-based products for the time being. And yes, that definitely includes bread and pasta.
3. Eat unprocessed foods. Ninety percent of what you eat should be food that could have been hunted, caught, gathered from the ground or plucked from a tree.
4. Reduce starch to one portion a day, and don't eat that portion during your evening meal. Best choices are oatmeal, sweet potatoes and beans.
5. Don't overdo fruit: two a day maximum, and only the low-sugar, high-fiber variety. Apples, pears, plums and berries all are good choices. Bananas are not. For now, fruit should be eaten alone or with something light like nuts or a little cheese. Lose the fruit juice.
6. Reduce or eliminate dairy for the time being, especially cow's milk. Exceptions: reasonable amounts of cheese and occasional portions of yogurt, but not the fat-free kind (it contains way too much sugar).
7. Lose the booze. Despite what the "studies" say, you lose no health benefits by giving up alcohol. There is nothing essential in alcohol that you can't get in fruits and vegetables.
8. Stop using vegetable oils such as sunflower, safflower and corn. The supermarket kind is highly refined, and it oxidizes easily when heated, contributing to arterial plaque. Use olive oil instead.
9. Watch which types of fat you're eating. The amount of fat you eat is probably less important than the kind of fat you eat. The worst are fried foods, margarine and foods that contain hydrogenized or partially hydrogenized oils.
